BELEXPOCENTAR, BELGRADE | 26–27 FEBRUARY 2016

We want to help pre-school institutions, schools, universities and other organisations involved in education to become more innovative, modernise the learning process and exploit all the possibilities provided by new technologies. We also want to help entrepreneurs and companies present their products and services that have the potential to change the education process of future generations. All participants will be able to meet world experts in this area and find inspiration by experimenting with new technologies and speaking with partners and colleagues from the region and the rest of the world.
These important topics will be discussed at a large regional conference in Belgrade, and will be followed by an exhibition programme, during which companies, publishing houses and educational institutions from both Serbia, the region and the UK will present their solutions. New areas of interest will be the use of ICT in pre-school education, ICT and lifelong learning and best practice examples from these areas.

Awesome free education resources for teachers and students

Education should be about sharing as much as learning. So with that in mind we’ve put together a selection of the best free online educational resources out there to use or share with friends, class-members, teachers and lovers of learning in general!

. GoConqr

If we’re starting off with the most awesome education resource, then we’ve got to put our own offering top of the list – but then we’re somewhat biased! Of course there are plenty of educational resources out there that offer similar things to GoConqr: some let you can create learning resources such as Mind Maps or Quizzes. Some will let you find great content. But what sets GoConqr apart is that you it brings creativity, discovery and collaboration together on a single platform (that’s available as an app too), for free. No wonder we’re a bit biased. Click here to sign up and start creating now.

2. English and Maths games for adults

Gamification in education is something that we’ve covered in the past in a previous blog post, and BBC’s Skillswise uses it brilliantly to both test and teach your reading, writing, spelling and grammar skills. Though essentially aimed at adult learners, second-level students are highly likely to find it useful too.

3. AwesomeStories

AwesomeStories brings learning to life through – you guessed it – the power of storytelling! The twist is that is brilliantly weaves together multiple narrative methods such as video, text and image with excellent research to make a huge range of topics highly accessible and interesting to students.

4. Edutopia

Edutopia is a website that’s primarily aimed at educators but features countless informative articles, blogs and videos on everything from tips on how to motivate students to thoughts on how to improve classroom integration.

5. Smithsonian

A fantastic resource for teachers, students and parents alike. As you’d expect from the complementary website to one of the world’s most famous museums, theSmithsonian Education site lets you easily find articles, activities and videos on just about anything and everything – art, science, history, geography and much more. It’s not quite as great as going to the museum in person, but it comes a close second!

6. How Stuff Works

A great resource for hyper-curious, roving intellects out there, of all ages. How Stuff Works is an extremely broad site that will provide thorough and satisfactory answers to pretty much every question you can think of: What is a land trust? How much can a goldfish remember? How do animals communicate? Just note that the site is intended for general users, which means that it’s easy to get distracted by the countless facts and info available, so if you want to find something specific it might be wise to use the search bar!

7. TED and TED-Ed

TED has been providing users with wonderfully educational talks from some of the most influential and innovative speakers and thinkers in the world today, covering everything from the history of bread to artificial intelligence.
TED-Ed expands on TED’s remit by offering not just ideas worth sharing, but lessons worth sharing too (think videos that come with questions, suggested resources, discussion topics and so on). These lessons can also be customised to suit the particular needs of a teacher of class of students. Think of it as springboard for lesson and discussion ideas in your own classroom.

10 Study Tips to Achieve your Goals in 2016

For many of us, the new year represents the perfect opportunity to reflect on where we are, think about where we’d like to go, and make a plan for how we can get there.
This is particularly true of students that are looking to make the most of their study time and get better grades at school. That’s why we’ve put together a list of study tips to help you develop a learning strategy that will allow you to achieve your study goals in 2016.

1. Set Study Goals

There is lots of credible research suggesting that goal setting can be used as part of a strategy to help people successfully effect positive changes in their lives, so never underestimate the power of identifying to yourself the things you want to achieve. Just make sure to ask yourself some key questions: Am I setting realistic goals? Will I need to work harder to achieve those goals? If you’re happy with the goals you’ve set then you should aim to develop your study plan for the year ahead with your goals in mind. Which, as it happens, leads us to Tip #2!

2. Make a Study Plan

Time is precious. Nobody is more aware of this than the poor student who hasn’t studied a thing until the night before an exam. By then, of course, it’s too late. The key to breaking the cycle of cramming for tests is to think ahead and create an effective study plan. Not only will this help you get organised and make the most of your time, it’ll also put your mind at ease and eliminate that nasty feeling you get when you walk into an exam knowing that you’re not at all prepared. As the old saying goes, fail to prepare and be prepared to fail.

3. Take Regular Study Breaks

None of us are superhuman, so it’s important to realise that you can’t maintain an optimum level of concentration without giving yourself some time to recover from the work you’ve put in. This can take the form of a ten-minute walk, a trip to the gym, having a chat with a friend or simply fixing yourself a hot drink. If it feels like procrastination, then rest assured that it’s not: taking regular short breaks not only help improve your focus, they can boost your productivity too.

4. Embrace New Technologies

Studying no longer means jotting things down with a pen on a scrap of paper. The old handwritten method still has its place of course, it’s just that now there are more options for personalising study that ever before. Whether it’s through online tools, social media, blogs, videos or mobile apps, learning has become more fluid and user-centred. If you want to try a new learning technology,  GoConqr’s free platform is a great place to start, even if we do say so ourselves!

5. Test Yourself

It’s a strange thing, but sometimes simply entering an exam environment is enough to make you forget some of the things you’ve learned. The solution is to mentally prepare for the pressure of having to remember key dates, facts, names, formulas and so on. Testing yourself with regular quizzes is a great way of doing this. And don’t worry of you don’t perform brilliantly at first – the more you practice, the better you’ll become. Don’t believe us? Then just take a peek at what the experts have to say.

6. Find a Healthy Balance

Take this opportunity to evaluate yourself both physically and mentally. Is your engine running on low? Instead of  complaining “I never get enough sleep” or “I’m eating too much convenience food” take control and do something about it! Make the change and see how it positively affects your attitude and study routine. This should motivate you to maintain a healthy balance in the future.

7. Be Positive

Your attitude has a big impact on the level of study that you get done and the effectiveness of your learning process. If you keep saying that you can’t do it and won’t commit to the idea of learning, attempting to study is only likely to become more difficult. Instead, focus your mind on positive outcomes and on how you can use your own individual strengths to achieve them. When you think positively, the reward centres in your brain show greater activity, thereby making you feel less anxious and more open to new ideas.

8. Collaborate with Study Partners

At this stage of the school year, you should know your classmates pretty well. This is a good point in time to select a couple of study partners who you know you work well with and are motivated to achieve good grades also. Don’t worry if you can’t meet up too often, you can use online tools such as GoConqr’s Groups tool to communicate and share study notes with one another.

9. Turn lessons into stories

Everybody likes to read or listen to a good story, and with good reason – not only do stories entertain us, they help us to understand and memorise key details too. You can apply this to your studies by weaving important details or facts into a story – the more outlandish and ridiculous you can make it, the better (since you’ll be more likely to remember a particularly crazy story).

10. Establish a Study Routine

Your study routine is comprised of more than planning what to learn and when. One of the main concerns is your study environment.
Find a place to study that is quiet and with few distractions. Alternatively, you could also try switching it up by sitting in a different place in your school library every day and seeing how this works for you.

There really aren’t any hard and fast rules to play by when it comes to best times for studying or how long you should work for. Everybody is different, so the best way to establish a routine is to try different things and see what works best for you, then modify your routine for maximum learning effectiveness.

Learn How to Study Better than 99% of your Classmates

When we look for advice on how to study better, most articles trot out the same old advice: create a study schedule, review it frequently, get plenty of sleep, and so on.
Now while tips like these will almost certainly be effective in helping you reach your goals, we’re going to go a step further. We’re going to give you tips that aren’t so common – but ones that will help propel you beyond 99% of your fellow students all the same!

6 Tips for Amazing Study Success

1. Combine various sources and form your own view

Generally speaking, students look for good, reliable notes (either from classmates, books, online or  resources) and then rush off to school, feeling well prepared.
This approach can be successful, but in order to excel, it’s best to compare several sources (books, presentations, videos and so on) and combine these together by creating your own study material.
By doing this you can ensure that your study material doesn’t remain static, but continuously improves. If you find something new or interesting that’s related to the topic, then add it in.
This will help you to deepen your understanding of the issue as you’ll have examined multiple points of view. You can then form your own informed opinion on the matter – something that will be lacking in most of your peers.

2. Measure your progress from the day one

It’s nothing new for students to simulate a test environment and create or participate in quizzes to see how much they know about a subject. However, most students test themselves like this when it is too late and exams are already steadily approaching.
The solution is to make and take small tests regularly from the beginning. If you can make a habit of this and incorporate it into your study routine then you’ll have a much clearer idea of how you’re progressing and any areas you might need to brush up in. Not only will doing so help you retain information for longer, it will also reduce your stress levels and prepare you for an exam-type environment.
GoConqr Quizzes is ideal for this purpose as it collects all your test results and lets you keep track of your scores over time, thereby letting you monitor your progress in a given subject.

3. Use your emotional intelligence

In many cases, what really distinguishes the most outstanding students isn’t their academic intelligence but their emotional intelligence. “So what’s that?” you ask. Well, emotional intelligence relates to your ability to stay motivated and cope with stressful situations.
Research by Stanford University actually found that students’ emotional quotient (their EQ) was actually a better predictor of success that their intelligence quotient (IQ). How you perform over time basically comes down to whether you have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset fixate on problems and feel overwhelmed, while those with a growth mindset embrace challenges and treat them as a chance to learn something new.
A good strategy to build a growth mindset is to meet your learning needs head on. Try not look at studying as merely being part of exam preparation as this puts the emphasis on being examined instead of instead acquiring knowledge. If you focus on learning instead of cramming, your understanding of a topic and your ability to recall information about it later will be far better. So approach your studies in a positive way by viewing learning and knowledge as valuable ends in and of themselves.

4. Don’t compare yourself to others

It may seem ironic that one of the tips on how to study better than 99% of your classmates is by not comparing yourself to them, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true – in the end, success means something different to each of us.
Therefore, the top students do not pay attention to what the next person is doing because they’re focused on their own needs and goals. Aside from that, comparing yourself to others only puts creates undue pressure and restrains both levels of motivation and creativity. So don’t get bogged down in competition by trying to emulate someone else – follow point 3 and use you emotional intelligence to self-motivate your way to achieving your own success.

5. Avoid shortcuts

In line with the above, what really matters is your personal learning experience. Even if you know that you can get the answer to an exercise you’re doing on the Internet or from a friend, take a step back! Of course you can ask others for their help, but always put your personal learning goals first and foremost. Get the information you need and find your own answers.
In the long run, it is much more important to get results through effort and dedication.
“Laziness may appear attractive, but work gives satisfaction.”
– Anne Frank, The Diary of Anne Frank

6. Communicate with others

While you should have your own personal learning goals, study can also be a collaborative process. There are huge benefits to growing a network of contacts (teachers, peers and anyone else who may be interested) with which you can get in contact to discuss ideas and share views.
The Global Development Research Center actually lists up to 44 benefits of collaborative learning, including more developed critical thinking skills and complex thought processes.
To get your contacts up and running, GoConqr Groups lets you easily bring together a group of people that can actively contribute to the flow of knowledge.
So there you have it, our uncommon advice on how to become an exceptional student. One word of warning though, just be ready for the requests for help and advice from others once you’ve sharpened your study skills and mastered your topics!
